Tessa C. plays bass with Californian rock-band Tessatura

--------------------------------------------

Where are you based Tessa? I'm in Sunny California, USA. I live in Burbank!

When did you first take a bass in your hands? Well, my mom bought me a cheap bass beginners package and I started learning how to play.

What attracted you to playing bass? To be honest I was never interested in playing the bass, I learned first out of necessity as my band and I just couldn't find a bass player. So I said fine, I'll learn how to play it! Now I love playing the bass!!

Did you play any other instrument before you started playing bass? I kind of fiddled around with the keyboard, never really became advanced at it though.

Can you remember the first song you ever learned on bass? I learned one of my band's original song's called "Stay Away". It's kind of a slow paced heavy rock song.

What was your very first public performance? The first time I did a show playing the bass was at a venue called Cobalt Cafe, a place in Canoga Park, CA. I was a bit nervous mainly because I was so use to performing without any instrument. I now have gotten use to Rock out with a bass!

What’s your current band? My band is called "Tessatura". The name means a range of a melody and a pitch and a musical composition. In Italian, it means stubborn and thick-headed, Ha, Ha! It really does though. We consist of three members, myself, my sister Anissa who play's the drums and our guitarist, Mike. For anyone who may be interested, you can check out our website on this website's Links page.

What’s your main bass? My main bass is a Gio Soundgear Ibanez.

Body colour/wood? The body is agathis and the colour is a cool Silver.

Neck/fingerboard? The neck and fingerboard is a one piece maple neck and rosewood fretboard

What strings to you like best? Any brand is fine but I do like the medium size.

What is your backline bass amp setup? My Bass amp is an Ultrabass BX1200 Behringer.

Fingers, plectrum or both? I usually only play fingers. It's more of my style and sounds good for our type of music and our song's.

What type of music do you play? I play rock. We have alot of Classic Rock as well. I have a few little riffs I play. It's fun!

Who do you listen to when you’re not playing? Always AC/DC, I can never get enough of them. I also listen to Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, Rolling Stones, Audioslave, Annie Lennox, The Eagles, Queen, Robert Plant, U2 and The Who. Lot's of the classic's!

Have you recorded/released any CDs? I play the bass on our recording's. We are in the process of putting a demo together and shopping it.

What was your best gig/venue ever? Probably our BB King's shows. We have played there several times and we love it. The audience is great, the sound is pretty good and the atmosphere is pretty cool.

What was your worst moment onstage? Unfortunately my mic cable has popped off a few times, once even at BB King's. Luckily I put it right back on without missing too much of the song.

What’s your favourite album/CD? Well I have a few, AC/DC's "Back in Black", "The Razors Edge", "Highway to hell", The Eagle's "Hotel California", Led Zeppelin's Greatest Hits and Queen's Greatest Hits.

Do you own any other instruments? A keyboard that I do not play but is now being played by my sister. She plays it quite well infact.

Do you sing? Yes I do. I am the singer/songwriter/bass player for my band!! I've been singing for about 12 years now.

Did you ever perform onstage without your bass? I never used to play the bass until a year and a half ago. Until now, I always just performed.

What’s your opinion on basses with more than 4 strings? I've never played a bass with more than 4 strings, so I'm not really sure. I do know that I prefer a bass with only 4 strings. I think it's cool though that you have that option to play with more.

What do you feel is the bass-players function in a band? To keep the music more alive, fat and full! The bass always completes a song, otherwise it can sound kind of empty.

Did you ever have a famous person in your audience?  I've actually had quite a few famous people in the audience while performing. I've had Mimi Kennedy from The Drew Carey show, baseball player Sammy Sosa, David Lacher from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, the girl who played Darlene on Roseanne, DJ Clarence Barnes from 102.7 KISS FM, and last but not least the legendary Bob Hope.

What are your ambitions? To make music and share it with everyone. To perform all over the world and lift this negative world!

Anything else Tessa? I think this world is a better place with music, music that is positive or fun anyway. Music always has been apart of my life and I can't imagine living without it. You can learn from music. You can also learn from playing an instrument. You become more world-rounded I think. It's a passion and it fulfills one's way to express themselves, through song's, lyrics, and an instrument!
