Cristina Patrizi (Italy)

Cristina Patrizi was born in Rome, Italy in 1983. When she was 13 years old, she started to play electric bass. Now, she is studying at "Percento Musica" in Rome, with Marco Siniscalco and Pierpaolo Ranieri. Besides, she has started to learn to play bass for classical orchestras with maestro Andrea Pighi.

Maria Cristina Patrizi, where are you based? Rome, Italy.

At what age did you first take a bass in your hands? At the age of 13.

What attracted you to playing bass? Every song, every kind of music repose on this instrument. I think that bass is the heart of music

Did you play any other instrument before you started playing bass? Yes, I've played elecrtic guitar for some years before devoting myself absolutely to bass.

Can you remember the first piece you ever learned on bass? Yes, it was The Police's 'Every Breath You Take.

What was your very first public performance? I was 13 when I've played as a supporter for my sister's group. She plays drums.

What's your current band? La Menade, an all girl-band who is about to issue a CD in November. I also play in a blues cover band.

What's your main bass? Fender Jazz Custom Shop Sunburst / Alder body, maple neck

What strings to you like best?  DR Billy Sheehan 40/100

What is your backline bass amp setup? A Ha3000 head (300 watts at 4 ohms) and a SWR Goliath Junior III

Fingers, plectrum or both? Only fingers, please!

Have you played double or acoustic bass? I never played acoustic bass, but I' m learning to play double-bass.

What type of music do you play? With La Menade I play hard rock and new metal, I also love to play blues, jazz, fusion and above all, funky.

Who do you listen to when you're not playing? I listen every kind of music, because I think good music is everywhere. My favourite musicians and groups are Jaco Pastorius, Marcus Miller, Charlie Parker, Alain Caron, Les Claypool, Miles Davis, Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, Aerosmith, Emerson Lake and Palmer, Deep Purple, The Yardbirds.

Have you recorded/released any CDs? Yes, Ive recorded some CDs. Lately, Ive finished the studio sessions for "Conflitti e Sogni" ("Conflicts and Dreams"), the La Menade' s CD at the Red House Recordings Studio in Senigallia, Ancona, Italy.

What was your best gig/venue ever? In June 2005, I've played a bass solo at the sample of my school music (Percento Musica, Rome). It was great!

What was your worst moment onstage? Two years ago, I went in Padova with La Menade, to play in a little pub. I was diseased with fever and our singer fainted during the exhibition.

Were you ever on a TV show? Yes, I've appeared on a show at the sattelite channel "Rock TV" with my group La Menade.

What's your favourite album/CD?  I've not only one favourite CD: there are four at least: the first album of Jaco Pastorius, Deep Purple In Rock, Jethro Tull's Aqualung and Aerosmith's Rocks.

Do you play/own any other instruments? Yes, I play a lot electric guitar

Have you ever performed onstage without your bass?
Yes, for some years I've performed with electric guitar

Have you played outside your own country? No, never.

What's your opinion on basses with more than 4 strings? They can be good, but I prefer basses with 4 strings

What do you feel is the bass-players function in a band? It depends to the kind of music you play. But bass is often a backing instrument

What are your ambitions? I would like to be an excellent musician.
