Steph Motley (Isle of Man)

Steph Motley, where are you based? Onchan, Isle of Man

At what age did you first take a bass in your hands? 16

What attracted you to playing bass? I was lead vocalist and rather than take in a further member, I took on the role and took to it straight away, and love playing bass

Did you play any other instrument before you started playing bass?
a little guitar and trumpet!

Can you remember the first piece you ever learned on bass? Crazy Nights by Kiss

What was your very first public performance? A school performance in front of 2000 people..very scary

What’s your current band? Twisted Angels

What’s your main bass? I am endorsed by Ibanez so it changes, but I currently use an Ibanez edb series and an Ibanez sgr series. One is tobacco burst, the other is a greeny flame top the edb is made of luthite with a rosewood fingerboard.r

What strings to you like best? Ernie Ball

What is your backline bass amp setup? Laney 400 watt R4H head, 4x10 cab and 1x15 cab

Fingers, plectrum or both? fingers...I can get the rythm better!

What type of music do you play? Rock/Punk

Who do you listen to when you’re not playing? Allsorts from Evanescence to The Misfits, Bad Religion etc

Have you recorded/released any CDs? a few, our new album Alter Ego is available from all stores now, and our new single, LA, is released 31st October

What was your best gig/venue ever? Probably headlining at The Hippodrome on Leicester Square, but as long as the audience are into it, it doesn't matter about the size of the venue.

What was your worst moment onstage? When we first started 3 years ago we had to perform instrumentally after the PA blew up

Were you ever on a TV show? We've been on ITV and BBC, and our new video is currently being shown on FIZZ etc.

Did you ever make the cover of a magazine? a few in the UK

Do you play/own any other instruments? I own a few acoustic guitars and an electric guitar

Do you sing? I'm the lead vocalist as well

Have you ever performed onstage without your bass? In the early days, when we didn't have a bass player

Have you played outside your own country? Of course, pretty easy when you live on the Isle of Man!!

What’s your opinion on basses with more than 4 strings? haha, no need!

What do you feel is the bass-players function in a band? To compliment the rhythm section and provide a hard base for the song to rock on!!

Did you ever have a famous person in your audience? Do tell! Well, we've had the UK Subs, Norman Wisdom, the singer from Kajagoogoo (haha) and probably Rick Wakeman.

Did you come from a musical family? My mum loves to sing, and still does!

Are your siblings and/or parents involved in music? My sister isn't very musical, but as I mentioned my mum loves rock..in fact I was born to the sound of bat out of hell!!

If forming your ideal live band, what instruments would you have with you onstage? guitars, drums and bass...that's all I need , though keyboards can be nice

Do you see the bass as a solo instrument? in many ways I used to see it as just backing, but a lot of our newer songs use the bass very much as a lead instrument.

Apart from your own projects, have you played recording sessions with other artistes? Yes, our manager often writes songs and I sing on them

Have you ever been to Ireland? Yes, in fact we played in Dublin last year.

Do you favour active or passive electronics/pick-ups? either, I don't have a preference

What other instrument would you like to play? I'm happy with bass and vocals

If you could be taken to a concert anywhere on earth tonight, who would you want to see live? hmm, probably us, because I never get to watch our own shows!!

What CD are you listening to most these days? I have a very low patience threshold, I tend to flick between CDs.

What are your ambitions, musically and personally? To be happy, successful and to help other bands. To continue making music that people love and to make a living from it!

Do you have a pet? yes a black cocker spaniel called Holly which belongs to me and our manager, who is also my boyfriend (must be a smart dog?! - Ed.)

Do you write/compose? I write a lot of Twisted Angels songs, but we all have an input

Do you have a day-job or do you play professionally? I am fortunate enough to do this professionally

Give one piece of “golden” advice to someone who has just bought their first bass? Persevere, learn as much as you can, and keep trying

Have you any “bassist” jokes to share? haha no, but what do you call someone who hangs around with musicians? A drummer...sorry Andrea!
