Suzanne Klappe (Netherlands)

What’s your full name? Suzanne Klappe

Where are you based Suzanne?  Eindhoven, The Netherlands

At what age did you first take a bass in your hands? 18

Did you play any other instrument before you started playing bass? I started teaching myself to play my dad's acoustic guitar when I was about 15 or 16. After a while I got a little bit bored so I bought an electric guitar. I was already considering bass but thought I should learn some basic guitar stuff first to understand a little bit more about that, which is easier in a band. A few months later I saw a left-handed version of my current bass in a store and fell in love. I couldn't get it out of my mind and ordered it. I did think it was easier to find a band this way because there's more people playing guitar then playing bass, hehe. True, about a week after I bought my bass I met my previous drummer/singer.

Can you remember the first piece you ever learned on bass? No sorry. probably something by Bikini Kill.

What was your very first public performance? With my bass? that must have been at a party.

What’s your current band? Displayed

What’s your main bass? I only have one. It's a Squier P-Bass Special

Body colour/wood? It's purple. I don't recall what they called that kind of purple and they don't sell it anymore. As for the material, BODY: Agathis, NECK: Maple; FINGERBOARD: Rosewood, 9.5”

What strings to you like best? I must admit I don't change them too often. As long as they don't break and don't hurt my fingers too much I'm okay.

What is your backline bass amp setup? We just use whatever the bar we play at has. I have a Fender Frontman 25B (75W) amp at home but don't use it much to spare the neighbours!

Fingers, plectrum (pick) or both? Pick. I try playing with fingers but suck at it.

If plectrum, which ones? Jim Dunlop Big Stubby 3.0mm! I love those (and they're purple! big plus but not the main reason) I try/have tried others but none are as good for me as these.

Have you played double (upright) or acoustic bass? No. maybe one day...

What type of music do you play? Punkrock kinda stuff.

Who do you listen to when you’re not playing? I mostly listen to bands with girls in them. The style of those bands vary of course. But it just inspires me. I listen to grunge, indie, oldies and some folk as well by the way, but the punky girl stuff is my passion.

Have you recorded/released any CDs? Not yet. We do have a rehearsal recording on a DIY compilation tape though.

What was your best gig/venue ever? Best venue was the OCCII in Amsterdam. Because it was the biggest one, the first one we played with this band, and I had seen bands I love on that same stage some years earlier. Our best gig so far was at the Bar&Boos in Leiden though. It was small, but we had fun. We're having some more gigs soon so my opinions might change. (Let us know - Ed.)

What was your worst moment onstage? The first song of the first gig. I have terrible stage fright and for some reason my left index finger froze. I could move every other finger except for that one. So I had to finish the song using different fingers. oh my. And then the next song I was so paranoid about the fingers that I forgot some very easy lyrics.

Were you ever on a TV show? No. Well, yeah, I think they showed a drawing I made as a kid somewhere once - hurray! That doesn't count huh? (Sure it counts! - Ed.)

Did you ever make the cover of a magazine? No. Are you trying to get me sad?

What’s your favourite album/CD? I find it very hard to answer questions like these because there are so many awesome albums in my collection. One of my favourites though is Linda Ronstadt's first Stone Ponys album. My favorite girl album is probably "Fontanelle" by Babes In Toyland - they are my favourite band. A random album I have been playing a lot lately is "Make Yr Life" by the Butchies - not my fave band in particular, but an awesome album that deserves a mention.

Do you play/own any other instruments? Yes, an acoustic guitar I stole from my dad, an electric guitar I found on his attic (a Harimu or something shaped like a Gibson. crummy-crummy but beautiful to look at anyway) and the black Squier electric guitar 'everyone' owns.

Do you sing? I have to. No one else in the band is gonna :)

Have you ever performed onstage without your bass? Not if you don't count primary school play thingies. (We do! - Ed.)

Have you played outside your own country? Not yet. but we will.

What’s your opinion on basses with more than 4 strings? Awesome, but it's not my style. I play easy stuff.

What do you feel is the bass-players function in a band? The bass-player is the glue?

Did you ever have a famous person in your audience? Do tell! Not yet. Just my friends who are in other (really cool) bands.

What are your ambitions? We would like to do more gigs, record a demo, and have some more fans.
