Ivy Griffin (Canada)

Ivy Griffin wasn't introduced to her love of the bass until the age of 15.  A guitarist boyfriend put a her first bass in her hands and soon after she was jamming with the local Toronto metal band known as 'Young Blood' and making her presence known in the indie scene. Young Blood packed out clubs and bars all over Toronto but after a great 3 year run, the band went their separate ways. Ivy went on to join all female, Ottawa band 'Spankdriven' which soon after moved to Toronto and quickly made a name for themselves all over southern Ontario.  Spankdriven landed endorsements with Switchmusic.com, Evidence Audio and Lace Music Products.  Spankdriven was also on 'Notes on Sound' on Fox 29 and appeared in a few local newspapers and Magazines.  Spankdriven's career was taking off but personal and musical differences tore them apart. Ivy is now working with ex Spankdriven guitarist Jenna and drummer Monica to form a new project which is yet to be named.  Look out for this heavy new project to emerge in the next couple of months, believe me you will hear about it!

Where are you based Ivy? Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

When did you first take a bass in your hands? I was 15 years old when I first held a bass

What attracted you to playing bass? Originally, it was put in my hands by a boyfriend whose band needed someone to jam with... it has evolved to much much more since then, and I can't imagine not having discovered it, as much as it was a fluke at the time.

Did you play any other instrument before you started playing bass? I played piano/ keys, violin, viola... tried some stand up bass, guitar, and am currently screwing around with drums a bit.

Can you remember the first song you ever learned on bass? It was called 'White Little Pill' and I doubt anyone has ever heard of it.

What was your very first public performance? I think my first show was at the 360 club in Toronto, it was a hell of a lot of fun. I was actually nervous back then, and tons of my friends from school came to check it out. We sounded like ass, but it was a lot of fun!

What’s your current band? it was Spankdriven but we recently went separate ways with our singer and are in the middle of auditions as we speak.  We are not rushing into a new band name :) wanna make sure it's perfect!

What’s your main bass? I play a Switch Innovo IV Signature bass from switchmusic, it's heavy as hell, but worth it!

Body colour? Switch signature series is completely 'wood free' the bass is made of polyurethane resin. It is one solid piece and although it is a pain on the shoulder, it has a great sound and amazing sustain. The one I play is a tri-color red/yellow/black, kind of like a giant rocket popsicle or the German flag!  It's pretty bold, but I've been told I pull it off quite well.

What strings to you like best? After 7 years, I still play around with different strings all the time. I've grown accustomed to the sound of boomers and D'addario's. I find it hard to stick to just one brand.

What is your backline bass amp setup? Currently, Peavey head with a Yorkville Speaker, definitely does the job  but is getting a little old.

Fingers, plectrum or both? Picks mostly

Which ones? Green Dunlop Tortex all the way! - 0.88 mm I like the texture and give.

What type of music do you play? Hard rock, progressive, heavy, melodic metal

Who do you listen to when you’re not playing? Tool, Deftones, Killswitch, System, Radiohead, Otep, Kaos, Primus, Pink Floyd.

Have you recorded/released any CDs? Recorded a few, none were major releases so far though.

What was your best gig/venue ever? Hmmm, outdoor shows usually tend to be the biggest. In Toronto, the biggest I've played is probably the Opera House although the best so far would have to be North Bay, in front of the Moose just a couple of months ago. It was a sold out Molson Canadian Rocks show and it was awesome!

What was your worst moment onstage? A BAD moment on stage?? I thought they were all good! :) I LOVE being on stage, I can't remember a really bad moment.

Do you sing? Yes, I do a lot of back-ups, I can sing but I am mostly a screamer.

Did you ever perform onstage without your bass? Sure, dancing, singing, gymnastics, acting... I've been on stage many times.

What’s your opinion on basses with more than 4 strings? Awesome, they can be very useful... the more strings you have, the more you can do with it.

What do you feel is the bass-players function in a band? It really depends on the band. Traditionally, to almost act as a bridge between rhythm and melody, fill in the low end, thicken accents but bass has taken lead in many bands.
