Where are you based
Tara? New York, New York
When did you first take a bass in
your hands? My cousin left his
electric bass at my house and when I picked it up I felt immediately
connected. It is really the instrument I was meant to play.
What attracted you to playing
bass? I just love the way it
feels, sounds and looks. I am big fan of melody but there's just something
about rhythm.
Did you play any other instrument
before you started playing bass?
I played the electric and acoustic guitar but not very well.
Can you remember the first song
you ever learned on bass? I
can't remember but it was probably a song my brother or myself wrote.
What was your very first public
performance? My first public
performance was at a club in Freeport Long Island that doesn't exist
anymore called The Right Track Inn.
What's your current band?
My band is called Iridesense, It's
the same band I've been playing in for the past 12 years.
What's your main bass?
I play an Ernie Ball Sterling Music Man.
Body colour/wood?
The body is a cherry/burgundy colour.
Neck/fingerboard?
Maple
What strings to you like best?
D'addarios
What is your backline bass amp
setup? I have a Hartke 5500 head
and a Mesa Boogie cabinet.
Fingers, plectrum or both?
Fingers only
What kind of music do you play?
We play a blend of rock, pop, and folk. Our sound is reminiscent of styles
from the 70's and 80's.
Who do you listen to when you're
not playing? I love so many
different artists and I have pretty eclectic taste. Currently I'm
listening to Fiona Apple, Jack Johnson, Coldplay, and NIN new cds. My all
time favourites are Led Zeppelin, the Beatles and The Cure. I will never
get tired of listening to them.
Have you recorded/released any
CDs? Yes, we've released two
CDs, (Cool Dream Tomorrow and Iridesense) independently and we're working
on our third that will be completed by January.
What was your best gig/venue
ever? The best gig I'd have to
say was when we opened for Sugar Ray at Stonybrook College. We played to
about 3000 people and after the show we signed autographs. It was really
amazing.. a close second is opening for Blue Oyster Cult and a third is at
a NY Islanders game.
What was your worst moment
onstage? I've had a few.. well I
broke a string at a gig once and I panicked. I've also had a few
"blank-out" moments if you know what I mean.
What's your favourite album/CD?
That's a really tough call... if I had to pick one I'd have to say The
Beatles White album. (sustained applause from Ed.)
Do you own any other instruments?
I have a keyboard and an acoustic guitar.
What's your opinion on basses
with more than 4 strings?
Personally I don't need it or want to take on more than I already am.
Singing lead and playing bass can be difficult at times. I know alot of
bass players who want the extra strings because they want to play those
higher notes. For me right now it's not necessary.
What do you feel is the
bass-players function in a band?
I think the bass players function is really be the pulse and backbone of a
song. Its important to lay down a steady groove but be melodic at the same
time. The bass and the drums are really the glue that holds a song
together.
Did you ever have a famous person
in your audience? We played at
Arlene Grocery and Anna Sui (a fashion designer) came with a friend of
hers. She approached me after the show to say how much she enjoyed it.
What are your ambitions?
To continue to improve my technique and chops as a bass player. Keep
writing, recording and performing music and have that music heard by as
many people as possible. I am grateful for the career I've had so far but
I want to open doors that I have yet to be opened. Also it would be
awesome to be in bass player magazine. (Won't this do Tara?! Ed.)
Anything else?
I would like to go on tour again. It was
amazing being able to see the country while sharing our music with so many
new fans.
