Heidi Donnelly (Canada)

/////
Heidi Donnelly was born and raised in Montreal. She grew up listening and loving music. Both her father and brother play guitar and at the age of twelve, Heidi decided that she would carry on the tradition. About a year later, her brother's band was in need of a bass player and asked Heidi if she would like to learn. Heidi immediately jumped at the opportunity and from there took on the bass as her full time instrument. She went on to play in many other bands and ended up forming the electro-pop duo "Hexes & Ohs" with her longtime boyfriend.

Heidi Donnelly, where are you based? Montreal, Canada.

When did you first take a bass in your hands?
Age 13, when my brother asked me to join his band.

What attracted you to playing bass?
Joining my big brother's band!

Did you play any other instrument before you started playing bass? Yes, flute and guitar.

Can you remember the first piece you ever learned on bass? no, not really, probably one of my brother's songs.

What was your very first public performance? It was a high school talent show.

What's your current band? Hexes & Ohs.

What's your main bass? A red Fender MusicMaster with a 3/4 length neck.

What strings to you like best? I've only had them changed once!

What is your backline bass amp setup? I use a Roland Bass Cube.

Fingers, plectrum or both? Fingers

What type of music do you play? Electro-Pop

Who do you listen to when you're not playing? A lot of acoustic girl bands. Innocence Mission, Ephemera, Azure Ray to name a few

Have you recorded/released any CDs? Yes, the most recent one being with my band Hexes & Ohs entitled "Goodbye Friend, Welcome Lover" on the Toronto label Noise Factory Records.

What was your best gig/venue ever? Best gig: Halifax Pop Explosion. Best venue: Cabaret Music Hall in Montreal.

What was your worst moment onstage? We arrived late to our show at CMJ in New York this year. We ran onto stage, set up our stuff, sound-checked and were performing within 15 minutes or so of us arriving. We didn't even have time to get a glass of water or pee! It was really stressful but we ended up playing extremely well.

What's your favourite album/CD? Right now, it's Broadcast's new album "Tender Buttons".

Do you own any other instruments? Yes, a pink heart shaped acoustic guitar, a baby accordion, and a Micro Korg synthesizer.

Do you sing? Yes. Mostly back up but I have more front vocal tracks coming up in our next album.

Did you ever perform onstage without your bass? Yes, I also play a Micro Korg and a baby accordion.

Have you played outside your own country? Only the United States so far.

What's your opinion on basses with more than 4 strings? I've never tried one, but yeah I suppose it would be good for lead parts.

What do you feel is the bass-players function in a band? To be the bridge between the rhythm and the melody.

Did you ever have a famous person in your audience? Do tell! We had a bunch of members of Sloan watching us once.

What are your ambitions? To release our second album successfully and to tour Europe.
