Where are you based?
I am just moving back to the Town I
have lived in for most of the last 30 years, Weston Super Mare, it is on
the coast of South West England, near Bristol, as for the rest of the band
we are from all over the south of England, all met through the internet.
When did you first take a bass in
your hands? Only just over a
year ago, not very long.
What attracted you to playing
bass? Well I wanted a change,
Chrissy is wicked on lead guitar and my partner Kira wanted to learn drums
so I decided to learn bass so we could start the band.
Did you play any other instrument
before you started playing bass?
Drums, Was school drummer, went to college to learn, played in a marching
band, learned with the Royal Marines, Played in a Rock ’n’ Roll band, and
kept up to practice, most recently playing with a Roland drum-pad.
Can you remember the first song
you ever learned on bass? I can
remember the first track I tried to play was ‘One Of These Days’ by Pink
Floyd, I say try because I don’t think I was up to speed.
What was your very first public
performance? School orchestra
about ** years ago, was on the drums for the first time as the new school
drummer, the head mentioned afterwards that my interpretation of ‘the
‘saints go marching in’ was defiantly a new angle on it but I got a big
round of applause from the whole school. Oestrogenix has not played live
yet, although that is the intention, from previous experience we decided
we did not want to get into the ‘Pub’ circuit, we have got a few gigs in
the pipeline for next year, we have promised to do Bristol Mardigras for
instance.
What’s your current band?
Oestrogenix, five of us, all met online just get on really well, 3 of us
started the band about a year ago, Chrissy on lead Guitar and my partner
Kira on drums. We did have another member, Tai played keyboard, but he
moved on to other things. Then we met Emma and Billie on Gaydargirls,
after a weekend in Bournemouth the 3 became 5. So the current lineup is:
Emma the Elvin Angel - Vocals & Percussion; Chrissy the Chemist - Lead
Guitar & Creation; Thumper Kira - Drum's, sound and web design; Billie the
whiz – didgeridoo and me - - Bass Guitar and Internet roadie
What’s your main bass?
Well as I am skint I am making do with a Stagg warlock, she is not some
posh amazing guitar but she holds her own, maybe when I make enough money
I will get something better but I am happy with her for the mo.
Body colour/wood?
She is a black goth bass,
Neck/fingerboard?
Rosewood
What strings to you like best?
Well I have recently relaced her with Dean Markley Signature LT 40-10.
They are the best I have tried so far.
What is your backline bass amp
setup? Well we have hired
before, not got our own amps at the mo, we are recording through our own
studio, pumping through our studio amps.
Fingers, plectrum or both?
Both
What type of music do you play?
Well its sorta progressive psychedelic rock, hate putting us in a genre,
we just play what we like, see what comes together.
Who do you listen to when you’re
not playing? Pink Floyd,
Placebo, loads of stuff.
Have you recorded/released any
CDs? We have recorded a demo CD
but we are trying to take a new route of online advertising, we have a
selection of free to download music online so people can hear us and we
hope like us, with time we will also produce some pay to download music
and videos, the internet as a music interface is growing, we hope to grow
with it.
What was your worst moment
onstage? As a roadie mopping up
after the Chippendales!
What’s your favourite album/CD?
Dark Side of the Moon
Do you own any other instruments?
Yes – Roland drum pad and a harmonica, and I am lending my mike to our
lead singer at the mo!
Do you sing?
Yes, well if you can call it singing! You can hear me on ‘faster faster
faster’
Did you ever perform onstage
without your bass? From behind
the drums yes
What’s your opinion on basses with
more than 4 strings? Maybe one day
but 4 is enough for me at the mo.
What do you feel is the
bass-players function in a band?
Rhythm and fill mainly, although I hate set places, we as a band create
music, it is fluid as to how.
Did you ever have a famous person
in your audience? No, but worked
alongside many as a roadie.
What are your ambitions?
Would be nice to think that we could make it as a band, we all have day
jobs at the mo, in order to pay the bills, our ambition is to make our
money from doing what we love, making music together.
