Neva Chiva (USA)

Neva Chiva, where are you based? San Diego, California, USA.

When did you first take a bass in your hands? 3 years ago at a friends house. he taught me how to play The Cures "A Forest"

What attracted you to playing bass? To me, when I hold my bass I feel powerful. the deep booming sound of each note makes me feel like I'm in a completely other world.

Did you play any other instrument before you started playing bass? Yes I dabbled at guitar and drums.

What was your very first public performance? At a pub called Java Joe's. A hole in the wall but good for a first timer.

What’s your current band? Eve White Eve Black (see Links page - Ed.)

What’s your main bass? Squier P-bass made by Fender, black body, red pick guard.

What strings to you like best? Ernie Ball hybrids

What is your backline bass amp setup? Peavy cabinet with a SWR workingmans 4004 head.Crate 50 watt for practicing

Fingers, pick or both? Dunlop nylon picks

What type of music do you play? gothy, punk rockish '80s inspired music.

Who do you listen to when you’re not playing? The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Beastie Boys, The Faint, Interpol, Bauhaus, Morrissey, Smiths, Joy Division, Futureheads, Clor, Pretenders, Pink Floyd, VNV Nation, Nin.

Have you recorded/released any CDs? recorded one this year. its being mixed and mastered as I type.

What was your best gig/venue ever? Well, our best show was probably Brick by Brick - Bitches That Rock show featuring female fronted bands that rock.

What was your worst moment onstage? Broke a string on the first song had to go hunting for a bass.

What’s your favourite album/CD? The Cure ~ Wish

Do you sing? back ups and lead on a couple

What’s your opinion on basses with more than 4 strings? Too much for me at the moment. I like the simple bass riffs that are highly effective, like Peter Hook from Joy Division and Simon Gallup from The Cure. Simon is my hero and always will be.

What do you feel is the bass-players function in a band? backbone - keep things steady and moving.

Did you come from a musical family? My mom raised me on a lot of different music but she was never a musician. I'm the first in the family.

If forming your ideal live band, what instruments would you have with you onstage? bass, drums, couple guitars and some keyboards.

Do you see the bass as a solo instrument? Yes absolutely. You can do a LOT of creative things with a bass if you try or even just a simple bass solo does me good.

What other bands have you been a member of? Eve White Eve Black is my first and only a year and 1/2 and going strong.

What other instrument would you like to play? I played drums once. It was fun pounding the shit outta the skins! Good stress relief.

If you could be taken to a concert anywhere on earth tonight, who would you want to see live? Well, since I've got my Bauhaus and Depeche Mode tickets already... I would love to see The Cure at Wembley stadium. They are my all time fave band.

What CD are you listening to most these days? Depeche Mode's playing the angel. It's great, the whole thing from start to finish is magic.

What are your ambitions, musically and personally? I want to be a great musician and have people say "wow, Neva does a great job. you can tell she really enjoys what she's doing"

Do you have a day-job or do you play professionally? I have a day job. I'm an insurance agent by day, rocker by night.

Give one piece of “golden” advice to someone who has just bought their first bass? Your hands are fucked from then on out - no pretty nails for you young lady!

Anything else? it seems typical that a chick is a bass player. but what people need to know, ROCKIN' AINT NO WALK IN THE PARK! it's tough. takes drive, passion and ambition, and most of all hard work and callused fingers.
